A Life Shaped by Wild Places
Philip is an ecologist, adventurer, and storyteller whose journey began in the wide, sun‑bleached landscapes of Etosha National Park, Sesriem, and the Namib Desert. These early years taught him to read the land — a foundation that shaped everything that followed.
It was during this time, in June 1980, that Philip met Denise — someone who would become a constant presence in his life. From the very beginning, she shared not only his company but also his commitment to the natural world. Together, they worked across Namibia and South Africa, moving through landscapes that shaped both their careers and their connection.
From the deserts of Namibia, their path led south to Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, and the Blyde River Canyon, where they continued their work in conservation and ecological management. These shared experiences formed the backbone of a partnership built on curiosity, resilience, and a deep respect for the land.
A Career Built on Curiosity and Care
Over more than three decades, Philip has worked across Australia, southern Africa, and remote island ecosystems as a fire ecologist, conservation scientist, national park manager, university lecturer, and ecological consultant. His work has taken him from the deserts of the Northern Territory to the rainforests of Christmas Island, and from university lecture theatres to remote fire grounds.
Throughout these years, Denise remained a steady, grounding presence — someone who understood the long hours, the fieldwork, the travel, and the deep pull of wild places. Her shared background in nature conservation meant she wasn’t just beside him; she was part of the work, part of the journey, and part of the story.
Why Chase the Sun Exists
After decades of scientific work, Philip realised that the moments that stayed with him weren’t just the research findings — they were the long roads, the quiet mornings, the unexpected conversations, and the landscapes that changed him.
Adventure motorcycling became a way to reconnect with that sense of space and freedom. Writing became a way to make sense of it. Chase the Sun is where those two paths meet — a place where science meets soul.
And woven into that journey is Denise’s quiet encouragement — the kind that comes from someone who has walked the same tracks, felt the same heat, and shared the same early mornings in the field.
A Creative Life Rooted in Nature
Philip’s work blends ecological knowledge with creativity, sustainability, and a deep respect for the natural environments that have shaped him.
Denise’s influence is here too — in the shared conversations, the gentle nudges, and the belief that creativity deserves space to grow.
A Closing Note
Chase the Sun is Philip’s ongoing journey — part science, part adventure, part reflection, and entirely grounded in a lifelong connection to wild places. Through stories, images, and honest moments from the road, he invites readers to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the world with a sense of wonder.
And through it all, there has always been someone walking beside him — from June 1980 to now — a reminder that even the most solitary landscapes are richer when shared.
